We picked this coffee for a Limited Edition offering during our trip to Nicaragua this past February. We thought it was a prime example of the excellent care and effort that the farmers of PRODECOOP put into their work.
The coffee comes from the San Isidro Cooperative, a small group of 78 farmers (45 men and 33 women) near the community of Cerro Blanco. They are located about 15 Km north of the town of San Juan del Rio Coco, a large and prominent growing region in the department of Madriz.
The terrain near San Juan del Rio Coco is pretty rugged: coffee grows in steep ravines and misty ridgelines, accessible by some gnarly dirt roads (trust us!), with plenty of shade tree cover. The cooler, damp air is perfect for growing high quality arabica.
Over the years, PRODECOOP has assisted San Isidro Cooperative with numerous support projects, from Roya recovery, farm renovation, citrus crop diversification, and overall technical support, as well as using Fair Trade premiums to fund health and wellness checkups for farmer members.
Their plans for the future include:
- increasing productivity
- securing long term markets for their coffee
- increased biodiversity to combat climate change
- better health and wellness for the farmers
- generating diverse income streams
- improving overall quality of life
We found this coffee to be very smooth and approachable, with mild apple-like acidity, sweet caramel and chocolate undertones, and medium to full body. We are proud to feature this microlot as a testament to their hard work, and hope you enjoy drinking it as much as we enjoyed finding it for you!
