Way up in the hills of Guatemala, Dean
was floored by how tuned-in the farmers were to the birds flitting through
their coffee trees. They knew what many folks are just waking up to now: no
birds, no balance. The native fruit and hardwood shade trees and feathered
friends weren’t extras; they were part of the coffee crew!
That stuck with us. We were bird-friendly
before Bird Friendly was even a certification, not because it was trendy,
but because it was just plain common sense. Healthy forests, happy birds, rich
biodiversity = better coffee. Simple as that.
