Timuza Organic Coffee Cooperative

Our relationship with coffee farmers in Papua New Guinea (PNG) goes back to 2004, when we first began investing in projects to strengthen local cooperatives. Dean's Beans funded the purchase of 14 hand de-pulping machines for farmers near the 14 remote airstrips where their coffee is flown out. These machines dramatically reduce hard labor while raising the quality, consistency and value of the beans.
Today, we work with the Timuza Organic Coffee Cooperative, whose members grow coffee in some of the most remote and rugged terrain in the world.
Coffee in PNG is truly unique, not just in flavor but in processing. Traditionally, farmers de-pulp beans using round river stones, a practice found nowhere else in the world. It’s labor-intensive work, especially for women, who do much of the work. To ease that strain and improve bean quality,
And the coffee itself? Mild in acidity yet full-bodied, with notes of warm spice, rich cocoa, and a touch of earthiness. Some cups carry hints of tropical fruit and sweet tobacco, while others lean into a bold, almost untamed character. The finish is long and slightly wild, a reminder of the rugged highlands where it’s grown. Each sip tells the story of both the deep traditions of Papua New Guinea and the innovation that is helping farmers shape a stronger, more sustainable future.
