We’re excited to announce that Dean’s Beans has earned a B Impact Score of 168.5 in our most recent B Corp recertification. That score makes us the highest scoring coffee company IN THE WORLD!!! And we’re really proud to celebrate it with you.
What goes into that number is a long story.
Dean’s Beans became a Certified B Corporation in 2018, joining a global community of businesses committed to using business as a force for good. B Corp certification, administered by the non-profit B Lab, evaluates companies' impact in the categories of governance, workers, community, and the environment. It’s a detailed, rigorous process that looks at how a company operates in the real world and requires those commitments to be built into the structure of the company itself. For us, it felt like putting a name to something that had been part of the company from the beginning; the belief that business can, and should, be a force for good.
Our first score in 2018 was 99. In 2022, we recertified at 110. Every increase reflected steady progress and improvement. This latest jump to 168.5 represents years of continued work across every category.
We’ve deepened our long-term relationships with coffee producers, continued investing in people-centered development projects guided by our farming partners, and strengthened environmental practices that support reduced carbon emissions, biodiversity, and resilience.
Part of this increased score also comes from our transition to a worker-owned cooperative. Today, the people who roast the coffee share ownership of the company. That structure brings a deeper level of connection and a sense of shared responsibility for the positive impact we’re committed to making.
The B Corp process helps keep us moving forward. Every three years, we go through a full reassessment of our practices and impact. It’s thorough, sometimes challenging, and always valuable. It gives us a clear picture of where we’re doing well and where we can keep improving.
Reaching this score of 168.5 is a milestone. It reflects decades of work, a lot of strong collaboration, and a shared commitment to building a business that supports people and the planet.
