This Coffee's Story

From the impressively rugged and isolated volcanic slopes of Huehuetenango, Guatemala, our coffee comes from ASOBAGRI (Asociación Barillense de Agricultores), a cooperative founded in 1989 that now includes more than 1,000 small-scale producers across 80 communities. Many members are indigenous Maya and retain their unique language, culture and dress, which can vary widely between villages. Partners since 2001 , we’ve watched ASOBAGRI grow into one of the country’s most respected co-ops renowned for consistency, sustainability, and a commitment to community well-being.

ASOBAGRI invests deeply in its members and their futures. From literacy programs to organic land management training to youth development, the cooperative is making sure knowledge and opportunity pass from one generation to the next. One project especially close to our hearts is Los Jóvenes, which provides agroforestry and entrepreneurship training for farmers ages 18 to 30. By creating meaningful opportunities in farming and business, ASOBAGRI helps young people stay rooted in their communities and traditions.

On our most recent visit, we were inspired by ASOBAGRI’s Agro Center for Bio Fertilizers, where nutrient-rich compost is produced through vermicomposting (using worms!). This innovation not only strengthens coffee plants but also keeps organic farming affordable and sustainable for members. It’s just one of the many ways the cooperative blends environmental stewardship with practical support for its farmers.

Through it all, their coffee is extraordinary. The volcanic slopes of Huehuetenango produce dense, high quality arabica, grown at 1400 meters (4600 ft) and higher with medium acidity, and smooth vanilla and chocolate undertones. Each cup is balanced, complex, and resonant, offering a unique flavor that reflects both the rugged highlands and the experienced care of the people who farm them. Certified Fair Trade, Organic, and Smithsonian Bird Friendly, this coffee represents resilience, innovation, and the collective spirit of ASOBAGRI’s farmers. Together, we’re not just growing great coffee, we’re growing futures.

Following severe flooding caused by torrential rains that washed out roads and bridges and damaged farmland, this collaboration focused on recovery and rebuilding. Resources were directed toward community-identified priorities, including replanting fields and restoring essential infrastructure.

Los Jovenos fits the bill for a fine mild roast coffee that can be enjoyed all day. I appreciate the double value offered by Deans Beans in supporting cooperatives in Guatamala affecting youth and women by offering Los Jovenos.

Compassion & courage come with each cup of this lovely coffee!

Your first cup of this coffee will make you feel as if you are already with a best friend! It is a delightful coffee with sandwiches, dessert and to dunk your cookies. This medium roast slides comfortable into your coffee repertoire alongside its "quirkier" coffee-colleagues! It is simply lovely! And this is no small enjoyment as brought to us steadfastly in the face of global catastrophe that has presented roadblocks to "normal" day-to-day functioning: when much stopped, the coffee kept coming and the forests for our avian population were not neglected. Compassion and courage come with every cup of this wonderful coffee!

A comforting coffee that can be part of every coffee lover's repertoire!

Coming home after surviving a skirmish with Covid-19, I appreciated lots of things, among them how much the "small" things are not at all small and how much courage it takes to carry on in the face of apparently insurmountable, mountaimous challenges. I was away from my great coffee for a while. It was a surprise to me what a substantial joy it was in my life to come back to Dean's Beans coffee. Lovely Guatemalan Medium Roast can be part of every serious coffee lover's coffee repertoire: its taste is comforting and lovely on the palate and after swallowing. It is terrific with sandwiches and for dipping your cookie. In these often grim times, such coffee is a not-so-small comfort. Enjoy this friendly coffee anytime. The other thing I saw which is worth noting is the indomitability, strength of character, largeness of heart and sheer courage for folks just to carry on. The members of ASOBAGRI Cooperative in Huehuetenango, Guatemala, who have carried on in the face of global disaster; the Dean's Beans artisans and administrators who have kept the coffee coming. This is a monumental undertaking: they make it look "simple!" To the growers, to the roasters, to the administrators: THANK YOU.

Great coffee

I tend to prefer light or medium roast beans, and I've tried most of Dean's medium beans. This mild, flavorful coffee is the one I always get now. I grind the beans a little on the coarse side and use an Aeropress (similar to a French press).

Delicious espresso

I tend to prefer darker roasts (Ring of Fire and Ahab) for my drip but did not find they worked as well for my espresso. The Guatemalan has been amazing and has a wonderful sweet slightly longer extraction and great finish. Timor Atsabe worked very well too but hate changing up the grind once the Guatemalan is dialed in. Super tasty and get to feel a little virtuous drinking Deans coffee. Delicious.
