This Coffee's Story

Ethiopia is known as the birthplace of coffee - and they know how to grow those beans! Our coffee comes from the Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union, made up of 34 member coops spread throughout the central plateau of Sidama.

Our head roaster marvels at a cupping lab in Ethiopia

We’ve partnered with the farmers of Sidama for many years, becoming one of the first to introduce Fair Trade, Organic Ethiopian coffee to the U.S. in 2008. But our connection in Sidama goes far beyond coffee. Since 2014, we've worked alongside Grounds for Health to support cervical cancer prevention and treatment in Ethiopian coffee communities. Together, we’ve helped screen more than 62,000 women and provide life-saving treatment for over 5,500, ensuring that the same communities growing this extraordinary coffee also gain access to critical care.

a group of Ethiopian women enjoy coffee while holding their children

In addition to supporting Grounds for Health, we have helped to fund reforestation efforts, coffee seedling and native hardwood nurseries, and schools in the Telamo and Boa Bedegelo communities.

Farmers from Sidama cultivate coffees that shine with the unique fruitiness and subtle earthy tones associated with the best Ethiopian beans. Grown at some of the highest coffee growing altitudes in the world and processed using the traditional sun-dried method, this coffee is bright, vibrant, and fruity, balanced with a smooth finish that consistently ranks among the finest we see each harvest. Sidama’s washed coffees have the trademark lemony citrus and floral notes that frequently reach 90 points on the cupping scale.

Turned me into a coffee lover!

I have never liked coffee, ever. I've tried and tried and tried, but unless I dunked a cup of sugar and cream in, coffee is completely unbearable to me.
So imagine my surprise when I walk into a store and I'm hit with the aroma of a fresh brewed coffee that's so appealing I had to at least *try* it. I step over to the sampling station, prepare myself a cup with a bit of cream and sugar, hesitantly take a sip, letting the alluring scent pull me in.
It's delicious. So delicious I bought a small bag and a french press to make more at home. Here I am, the next morning. sipping on a cup of coffee and writing this review to tell people to give it a try. It won't disappoint!
Thank you for changing my perspective on coffee

Hooked the first time I opened a bag

I never open a bag without closing my eyes and taking a deep breath - the aroma is fantastic. This is my absolutely favorite coffee and I get a double kick from knowing my purchase supports such worthy causes!

Our personal favorite for more than a decade!

My husband and I have been ordering from Deans Beans since 2013 and our favorite coffee flavor has been Ethiopia Oromia from day one. We have had quite a few different blends and enjoyed them all but not as much as we do Ethiopia Oromia. The beans are a beautiful dark brown with an oily sheen to them and they give off a wonderfully fragrant aroma every time you open the bag. The taste is just as described: Floral, fruity and smokey all at the same time. I drink coffee everyday and it has always been Deans Beans...we even take it with us on vacations!

Dark and fascinating - spearmint, toasted almonds, tobacco and prune juice

This is my first time buying Dean’s Beans and wow did it not disappoint! This is definitely for dark roast lovers. It’s a little on the heavy side and really lingers on your palate, but not in a bad way. I get mostly toasted almonds, tobacco, and prune juice… a beautiful and intoxicating brew. What is most fascinating is the initial aroma after brewing of spearmint. I’ve never noticed that in a coffee before but it’s really interesting and inviting. May become my regular bean, but now I want to try some of their other roasts! Also major points for freshness! (Aeropress upright, 23 on Comandante, 175 F, 16 g, ~250 ml.)

Favorite coffee, hands down

This is our favorite coffee, hands down. We discovered it as a bulk purchasing option at a small retailer (the Millstone Market) in Sunderland, MA. The beans are dark and very oily, and the aroma and flavor are superb. This coffee is smooth, rich, fruity, and floral, with an excellent body. Drinking it in the morning feels like a treat - with the extra bonus that not only is the company ecologically friendly and fair trade certified, but the roaster is local! Now I stop and purchase a bag every time I drive through Sunderland. Thanks, Dean's Beans!

Startling Smooth

I've been a Dean's Beans customer for many years & have tried quite a few different blends. "Ethiopian Oromia" has just become this household's morning choice. While brewing in a Chemex, the aroma is strong & smoky filling the entire kitchen with anticipation. The flavors do not disappoint. One gets a full bodied, floral, very smooth, & low acid cup of coffee. Plus, purchasing this blend supports a good many fine causes. Thanks once more Dean's for providing such a fine product that nurtures others. Bravo!

Delightfully Surprising

I thought that I had tried this before, but going through my orders from the past, I confirmed I had not. Wow! This is a delightful surprise: personally, I'd set the "aftertaste" at 7, but the boldness of the sip is so good. Smokiness throughout, and a taste of berries on the palate.

Outstanding

My son-in-law, who is Ethiopian, said this is the best. I'm American born and love it too.

This is the greatest. I have tried coffee from all over the globe, searching for the perfect cup...

I was in Djibouti and got to try locally roasted Ethiopian coffee, and Dean's Beans does it better. I love it so much, it is the only staple ordering that I insist on doing myself. Drink it black, and savor the flavor.

Very very dark. Heavy.smokey

Darkest heaviest I've tried. Wow. I wouldn't be able to drink this without heavy cream and sugar it's just too dark. If you like dark heavy toasty smell and taste you'll love this. That also seem to be quite high in caffeine compared to others. Made my heart pound.

My all-time favorite.

The bouquet is exquisite.
It is almost a liqueur.
