This Coffee's Story

Our Peruvian coffee comes from the Cooperativa Agraria Cafetalera Pangoa, located on the lush Amazonian slopes of Central Peru. In 2003, we took a chance on this small cooperative, becoming their very first Fair Trade and Direct buyer. Pangoa had earned both Organic and Fair-Trade certifications but could not find a buyer to justify the time and expense of those certifications. Our initial purchase opened many doors, and today, Pangoa is one of our longest-standing partnerships, one built on trust, respect, collaboration, and a shared vision for both exceptional coffee and thriving communities.

Founded in 1977 by just 50 farmers, Pangoa grew to nearly 2,000 members before the guerrilla violence of the 1980s forced many to flee to the cities. In the decades since, the cooperative has slowly rebuilt and today counts over 1,000 members among its ranks, many of whom are Indigenous peoples. In addition to coffee, members also cultivate cocoa and honey, diversifying their livelihoods and building economic resilience.

Our relationship with Pangoa has always gone beyond just buying their coffee. Together, we’ve launched women’s loan funds, income-diversifying honey projects, and college scholarship programs. One of our proudest collaborations is reforestation, planting over 120,000 native trees in that region of Peru over the last 21 years. These efforts not only restore biodiversity but also merit the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Friendly (Trademark) designation Pangoa has earned, which creates critical habitat for migratory species. Every sip of Pangoa's coffee is part of our shared efforts to fight climate change, preserving biodiversity and fragile ecosystems while support farming families.

Peruvian coffees are known for their mild sweetness, soft body, and gentle acidity. The beans from Pangoa, often cultivated by Indigenous Ashaninka farmers at high altitudes, shine especially in lighter roasts, where their subtle charm can be fully appreciated. Over the years, we’ve introduced this coffee to specialty markets in the U.S. and Europe, where it is beloved for its easy drinkability and delicate balance.

Peruvian Special

I have been roasting my own green Peruvian beans and find them more flavorful than even the Colombian. I buy this one for my church and it is well appreciated. The stories behind this coffee somehow influence the flavor.

I wish the stories here on the webpage were printable to that I could put them out next to the coffee pot at the Quaker Meeting.

I have been buying from Deans for many years now and find the coffee not only the best but the people who work there the most kind and helpful and committed I have encountered in the coffee world.

It is no coincidence that contented earth produces pleasing coffee that soothes the senses. When I feel a day of serious coffee-drinking coming on, this is the brew that is going all day in my old-fangled stove-top percolator on my old-fashioned not-computerized stove. Think the old truck stop with the greatest coffee; think grandma’s kitchen and heavy white mugs! I look forward to the next mug ot this comforting coffee as much as I looked forward to all previous mugs. And, yes, I keep a heavy, old-fashioned white mug for this brew! Old-fangled coffee: coffee from happy Earth. It is lovely; it brings sweetness to my day; and I love it!

Really Flat Flavor Profile

I love Dean's Beans and their mission. Aztec Two Step is my favorite coffee of all time. Every time I buy something else I end up regretting the purchase. This time is no different.

This coffee is just really lacking in flavor. It has some of the fruity-ness of a lighter roast, but after that it just falls flat.

A mild and delicious brew that is in fact a "gentle giant" whose growth is a gift to the planet and a tribute to every member of the team that followed the rigorous steps required to achieve carbon neutrality. This is a vast accomplishment anytime; miraculous in the face of global hurdles now before us. Balancing emissions with removal is the goal and it is a brilliant, determined team that brought this about. Delicious!

I buy this in 5-lb whole bean bags and the smell of freshly roasted coffee permeates my house! I grind .25g of beans for 20 oz of coffee and it is perfect. It is not acidic and does not leave a funny taste in my mouth. Great with a bit of half and half.

MMMMM....sweet, smooth!

This is a wonderful wonderful coffee. I chose this for the days when I don't put cream in my coffee I would never put cream in this coffee it's too sweet and flavorful and is light bodied....altho I make it quite strong. I grind this very fine and put in extra grounds into a drip.
Whether you like bold or blends or not, I think everyone will like this coffee. this is a coffee I will serve my guests.

Smooth and medium body coffee

Smooth as a Columbian bean with a very slight well rounded sweetness. Not as sweet as a Sumatran bean. Makes a clean and bright cup of coffee that is hard to not brew correctly to impress friends and guest with something new. This makes an excellent glass of ice coffee. The bean also blends with any dark roast beans to round out any custom mix.
